Mentions of Birthdays in the Bible.
The New Testament includes a passage that describes Herod’s birthday celebrations (celebrated with banquets) where they danced, ate, partied, and were always in a cheerful mood. In Genesis chapter 40, there is a passage describing how the king hosted a feast for all his servants to celebrate.
The several sections that described birthdays and festivities were often performed for Pharaohs or Kings. In some instances, the celebrations involved birthday presents.
What Does the Bible Say About Birthdays?
The Bible tells true Christians to be joyful daily because the Lord has made it. Because God is the one who created life, we ought to rejoice in it. Every new day that the Lord bestows upon us is cause for joy and thanksgiving because it was God who breathed life into our body on Earth.
However, the Bible does instruct us to give thanks to God regularly, and while it does not require us to commemorate the day we were born on an annual basis, it does indicate that we should do so. It is still up to the individual to decide whether or not they or want to celebrate their birthday. This is because the Bible does not include any mandates or prohibitions regarding commemorating one’s birth date, nor does it have any references to birthday celebrations.
The lessons that can be learned from the stories found in the Bible illustrate how birthdays have a way of bringing to light and reinforcing the less admirable aspects of people. The ages are regularly recorded, suggesting that, at the very least, birthdays were honored by the individuals. There is a significant gap between remembering a specific day and throwing a party to celebrate it, even though the former is critically vital.
Whenever birthday celebrations were discussed in the scriptures, the texts did not go into a lot of detail about them. What we do take away from such celebrations is that they were conducted to glorify the individual rather than the Lord, which means they were performed in vain.
However, we can celebrate a birthday to celebrate the life that God has given us.
